We started Boon pre-pandemic and could not have predicted the ‘work from home’ era that was to come. With bedrooms and spare rooms of all shapes and sizes across the country suddenly becoming a vital part of everyday life, it became clear we needed to create our version of a ready-made home office build, that would open up people’s outdoor spaces to work, live and sleep.
With the Boon Box we’ve gone small, but at an external square footage of 3.3m x 3.3m (internal 3m x 3m) this little cube is surprisingly spacious. Built with the ultimate WFH experience in mind, every detail has been carefully designed by people who regularly spend 40+ hours a week working from home. A calm and tranquil space, the Boon Box includes a generous sized floating desk, plenty of concealed storage, heating and air conditioning, mini fridge and built-in tea area, plenty of shelving and of course, a space to sit and relax with a view. Basically, everything you need to work from home… except the kitchen sink!
The purpose-designed internal cabinetry with concealed push-to-open doors, floats 15cm off the floor, ensuring the internal space feels light and spacious, with plenty of areas and surfaces to house files, books, printers and equipment. Our signature style rustic wood cladding covers the floors, ceiling, walls and shelving, giving a soft cocoon-like feel inside. The Boon Box’s external cladding comes in a choice of two finishes; natural wood, (treated with our special formula giving a slight lime washed finish), or stained black. We love both, each giving a completely different look.
As with all our builds, we choose to install Corston Architectural fixtures, fittings and lighting, with USB points at the desk area. We offer bronze, antique brass and polished chrome finishes within their range. The Boon Box is fitted with four ceiling spotlights, plenty of mains sockets, concealed power tunnel for running in external cables for Wifi, two external down lighters at the entrance and a generous decking area that wraps around the build.
Ensuring the Boon Box provides an attractive Zoom call background, we’ve sourced a range of handmade tiles from Otto Tiles. Choose from six Zellige and Encaustic Cement tiles carefully selected to complement the internal wood cladding perfectly, providing the tea-making area with a pop of personality on its splashback.
We were keen to create a home office build that was transparent in cost, with no hidden extras or unknown expenses. We want our customers to be able to get a price online when they visit our website, without having to wait for a quote to be emailed. Our online Customiser allows you to play around with different Boon Box configurations and finishes, seeing the price variations change there and then at the click of a button.
George Mayes says: “I love building big Airbnb cabins and multifunctional spaces on a grand scale for our customers, but with the Boon Box I wanted to create something on a small scale. The home office is such an interesting concept, now more than ever. I spend most of my time in the workshop but many of my team work from home for long hours, and with children and the pressures of balancing work and day-to-day life, I know all too well how important it is to have the right environment to work in.”
Garden Rooms and prefab offices, especially with any expanse of glass, whilst well insulated and warm in Winter, can become extremely hot and often unusable during Summer. It was important that we could offer the Boon Box with a heating and air conditioning solution, ensuring the temperature of the room is comfortable to work in all year round.
And for the gardeners amongst us, we couldn’t resist a built-in planter. The wrap-around decking allows for easy access to a 3.3m long side planter which is designed to encourage flowers to grow up in front of the desk window. What better way to take a break from work on a sunny day than to step outside and tend to your plants – we want people to be able to create their own beautiful vista to look out upon from their desk, wherever the Boon Box might be placed.
