THE PIGSTY

{ Completed August 2019 }

Winchester based Boon is a bespoke build company run by George Mayes. In September 2019 Boon completed its inaugural building project at Vale Farm on the outskirts of Winchester and The Pigsty was launched for luxury overnight stays, and it has been fully booked ever since. Guests shed the stress of the city and relax in a private belt of woodland set deep within a 600-acre farm all to themselves. The Pigsty is a beautiful creation, with a domed, corrugated steel roof, reclaimed timber throughout, double-glazed steel French doors and windows, fully fitted kitchen, roll top bath and reclaimed cast iron radiators.

It’s sound eco credentials set it totally apart from its rivals, creating a bespoke space that is luxurious, high quality and in-keeping with its natural surroundings. This is glamping re-defined, there is no canvas, no damp and no cold. The structure can be used all year round, paying for itself quickly and making it a smart investment.

ABOUT GEORGE

I run a building company in London, and for the last decade I’ve worked on mainly residential refurbishments and development projects around the capital. I’ve enjoyed it, and have gained a lot of experience working on big builds, but I love the continuity and efficiency of a workshop space which Boon allows me – and waiting for trades on a rainy building site in London does not! The design process is close to my heart, my dad designed and built power boats, and I love the creative nature of my work. I feel totally invested in it.

The build

We used a redundant grain store on the farm which allowed us to work constantly despite the changeable weather. It also allowed us to have all our tools and machinery in one place, an absolute joy for a project like this. It allows you control over the process which keeps standards high. We now have a workshop based just outside Winchester which we use to make all the modular elements to any project we undertake. It keeps the process tightly managed and of premium quality, which I feel is essential. The real bonus of a modular system is that the owner can relocate it in the future, allowing total flexibility.

The vision

The domed build was a creation of Boon, but we worked closely with our clients at Vale Farm to keep the specification exactly as they’d liked. Tweaks are made throughout the project, so it’s a pretty personal affair. We took architectural cues from the surrounding barns and natural environment and incorporated it into the design, enabling us to seamlessly merge the hard lines of steel with the softness of wood. We think it really works, and it’s fully booked a lot of the year.

Tthe process

We can work with you on almost anything modular or prefabricated, be it for renting out as a business, extra accommodation or for your own special granny-annex. The Pigsty can be redesigned, made bigger or smaller and we can change the style of the interiors, we just need to sit down and have a chat, and the creating can begin! After our first meeting we will create a design brief and a production time-scale for you. The costs can go up or down depending on your requirements, so it’s all about the conversation.
